Resources & Facilities

Self Access Centre Being part of a large university, the English Language Centre is able to offer its students a wide range of facilities that will help make their stay with us both enjoyable and academically rewarding:

Self Access Centre

The Self Access Centre is for exclusive use by students of the ELC. Entry is controlled by swipe card and students have access to two main facilities, the Language Laboratory and the Computer Suite.

The Language Laboratory
The Language Laboratory contains 20 cubicles and allows students to practise listening skills by themselves as well as to record and listen to themselves speaking English. The Laboratory is also used for whole-class lessons. It contains a seating area where students can work quietly and it is also home to students’ personal pigeonholes, a set of graded readers and novels, recorded and written practice materials, and a selection of magazines and newspapers to which the Centre subscribes. In addition, there is a growing library of DVDs and videos of popular films (with subtitles) which can be viewed in a small neighbouring room, either on two TVs with built-in video/DVD players, or on any of the computers in the computer suite.

Computer Suite
In addition to the university’s many general-access computers, the ELC has its own dedicated suite of 12 computers each of which is linked to the College’s intranet, which students can access via their own password. All twelve computers are linked to a high-volume printer and have a variety of language learning software installed on them, along with word processing and spreadsheet packages etc. They are also an important and convenient facility for university applications, which are now made on-line via UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service).

Student Common Room

A student common room is located at the front of the Drury Lane Building. This is a room in which students can relax and interact with each other between classes, and where they can read the Centre’s magazines and newspapers.

Maughan Library

Maughan Library
The Maughan Library, situated a short walk away from the English Language Centre on Chancery Lane, houses a collection that comprises 750,000 items of stock including books, journals, music scores, recordings and microfilms. 1542 print journals are subscribed to, with a complementary range of electronic titles available via the internet.

Open Learning Centre

Open Learning Centre
The Modern Language Centre provides an open-access room at the Strand Campus for students with an interest in English and modern foreign languages. The Centre's resources include foreign language textbooks and dictionaries, daily and weekly newspapers and magazines, video viewing facilities, satellite TV from several countries, audio cassette listening facilities and a multi-media network for CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning). The Centre's friendly and welcoming staff are on hand to advise students on how to make the most efficient use of the open learning facilities available.

Students' Union

King's College London Students' Union
As a full-time King's College student, you will automatically become a member of the Students’ Union, which is a student-led, student-focussed organisation. Among many other things, KCLSU gives you the chance to take up a volunteering opportunity, join or set up a club or society, become a member of student staff in one of their shops, bars or nightclubs, help to run a campaign, and run for election to the Student Representative Council.

Health Centre & Welfare Services

Health Centre
The Health Centre is an NHS practice, which provides health care for college students and staff. All those who live in the catchment area are eligible to register at the centre. This includes international students who are studying at King's College London for six months or more.
