Why choose the English Language Centre at King's College London?

King’s College is one of the oldest, largest and most prestigious colleges of the University of London. It has a proud tradition of excellence in teaching and research. King’s operates on five campuses in different parts of London. There are currently some 17,000 students engaged in study on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. There are nearly 4,000 overseas students from 130 countries at the College.
 
King's College boasts a long tradition of teaching English to international students dating back to the mid-1930s. Today, the English Language Centre prides itself on being a highly professional department that delivers courses of the highest quality via experienced and committed teachers. We offer English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses throughout the year, as well as a Pre-sessional course during the summer that is accredited by BALEAP (the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes). In addition, we service the English language needs of various external commercial, legal and other institutions by designing and teaching tailor-made courses. We are also a thriving centre for Cultural Studies, collaborating with the British Council and with other universities and colleges world-wide, and publishing extensively in the field.
 
The English Language Centre is a member of IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) and the AULC (Association of University Language Centres) and is accredited by the British Council.

How can I pay my fees?

You can pay the fees in several ways:
 
  • We accept Sterling Banker's draft, International Money Order, cash or cheques drawn on a United Kingdom bank. Cheques (including Travellers' Cheques) should be made out to "King's College London". We are unable to give change on travellers' cheques.
 
  • You can pay in person or send your payment direct to King's College London, English Language Centre, 26-29 Drury Lane, London, WC2B 5RL (nearest tube: Covent Garden). We are open between 9.00am and 5pm Mondays to Fridays to take payments.
 
  • If you are paying against an invoice issued by the English Language Centre, you can send a cheque to the Finance Department. The address is Credit Control, Finance Department, Room 5.35, James Clerk Maxwell Building, 57 Waterloo Road, London SE1 8WA. If you do this, please write your name and invoice number on the back of the cheque. I would also advise you to request a receipt. Please also notify the English Language Centre that you have done this.

    The payee will be responsible for any bank clearance and conversion charge made either by the payee’s bank or the College’s bank.

    Students should give the English Language Centre a copy of any documents relating to the transfer of funds to this account to ensure that their payments are identified.

    Please do NOT pay for any English Language Centre courses online.
 
  • The English Language Centre is unable to accept credit or debit card payments. However, the College’s Finance Department is able to accept such payments (Visa/Mastercard/Eurocard) provided you are paying against an invoice that has been issued by the English Language Centre. For credit card payments, please contact the College’s Finance Department direct on 020 7848 3257.
    If you have any problems with the payment of your fees, you should contact the English Language Centre (telephone 020 7848 1600, fax 020 7848 1601, e-mail elc@kcl.ac.uk).
    Please note that students who do not pay tuition fees on time are often not allowed to take university exams or to receive results.

Is the English Language Centre close to public transport?

The English Language Centre is based at Drury Lane close to the heart of Covent Garden and is easily accessible by both bus and underground. There are at least 30 bus routes which can drop you within a two minute walk from Covent Garden. As for tube stations, you have a choice of Covent Garden (Piccadily Line), Holborn (Central Line and Piccadily Line), Charing Cross (Northern Line and Bakerloo Line), Temple (Circle and District Lines). If you are travelling by train, the nearest mainline rail stations are Charing Cross and Waterloo.

Can I use the computers at the university?

Students registered on the International Foundation Programme (IFP), International Pre-Masters Programme (IPP) and Pre-sessional Course in English & Study Skills for Academic Purposes will have computer access rights including a King’s College email account.
 
Students can log on to central servers for email and general purpose computing from workstations on all the campuses. All workstations and servers are linked to each other and to the academic community beyond King's through the College-wide data communications network.
 
There is also a dedicated computer suite available for use by English Language Centre students at Drury Lane. You can use the computer suite whenever you are free and after class provided it is not in use for a timetabled class.

What is the average age of your students?

The average age of students can vary from course to course and from year to year.
 
King's College London does not have a minimum age requirement. However, in order to be admitted to the College a student must:
(i) Have demonstrated to the College's satisfaction, taking into account individual circumstances, the intellectual maturity necessary to gain full advantage from the educational experience offered by the programme of study;
ii) Have satisfied the College about any arrangements which are considered necessary if the student is under 18 years of age.

How many different nationalities are there?

As far as nationalities is concerned, the student profile on particular courses and across the English Language Centre changes from year to year.

What free courses do you offer?

The English Language Centre offers an In-sessional English Language programme, Academic Literacy programme and Writing Tutorial Service for King’s College students free of charge. King’s College students will also be eligible for a subsidised rate on the following courses:- Cambridge Proficiency course, Business English course and Legal English Writing Skills course.

How long do I have to pay my fees?

Students are required to pay their tuition fees in full prior to the start of the course in order to reserve a place. No reservations can be made without full payment. The only exception to this applies to students registering for the International Foundation Programme (IFP) and the International Pre-Masters Programme (IPP). These students are asked to pay a reservation fee of £3,000 and the balance of the fees prior to the start of the course.

I want to do a degree at King's College, what English course do you recommend?

If you are considering following either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme at university in the UK, we would recommend you consider applying for the International Foundation Programme (IFP), the International Pre-Masters Programme (IPP) and/or the Pre-sessional Course in English & Study Skills for Academic Purposes.

Do you offer evening courses?

The Business English course takes place on Thursdays from 17:30 to 19:30.
