Governance
King’s College London was founded in 1829, and its present Charter (pdf) was granted in 1980 and amended by the King’s College London Act 1997.
The Council is the governing and executive body of the College established under the Charter and Statutes (pdf). The main caveat to its authority is that it must seek and consider the opinion of the Academic Board on academic matters; the Academic Board being the body responsible for the academic work of the College in teaching, examining and in research.
In addition to the Council and the Academic Board, the Statutes also establish a Board of Management to advise the Council on the discharge of its responsibilities in matters relating to medicine and dentistry. This board is known as the King’s College London & NHS Partnership Board.
Through the Council and the Academic Board and their committees, the College has established a regulatory and policy framework to ensure the maintenance of standards across the College’s activities.
